The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.
But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…
This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.
Book Review :
“Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.”
Hauntingly beautiful, are the two words I would use to describe this tale of loss hope. Patrick Ness has created a compelling children’s novel that deals with heartbreaking issues in a way that is written so profoundly that it is accessible to a range of readers. From the origins of the story, to the beautiful images throughout, this is a tale that shouldn’t be missed.
It will imprint upon your heart to the point that you’ll spend hours memorising lyrically brilliant lines that speak to a quieter part within your soul, just how the monster spoke to Conor. I now adore Patrick Ness, much like I adore this tale.
